00:09
if you can imagine sitting in front of
00:11
your computer closing your eyes imagine
00:15
that your mouse is disconnected and
00:17
imagine that the monitor is unplugged so
00:19
imagine how you're gonna navigate using
00:21
a screen reader and just the keyboard I
00:24
did buy an Indian university a 18 s of
00:28
our accessible technology desktop has
00:30
helped level the playing field for
00:33
anyone that comes to this university
00:36
with any type of sight impairment I
00:38
think universities are particularly
00:40
important places where societies evolve
00:44
where we want to include everyone and
00:46
where we know it's a perpetually
00:47
unfinished journey but the work is most
00:49
valuable to do
00:55
we serve almost a hundred thousand
00:57
students our seven campuses or online
01:00
twenty thousand faculty and staff and
01:02
students all over the world taking
01:04
online courses at any given second we'll
01:07
have about two hundred thousand devices
01:08
touching the network at IU part of what
01:15
we've done with the Citrix platform in
01:17
our service I you anywhere is we have
01:19
the ability to create custom desktops
01:22
for any school any department such as
01:28
the School of Dentistry to provide them
01:29
a build that meets the HIPAA standard we
01:32
made the decision that we were going to
01:34
support protected health information
01:37
[Applause]
01:38
having one seamless authentication point
01:42
being integrated with the Citrix
01:45
workspace and then having the
01:48
applications for accessibility to be
01:50
able to integrate that login when it
01:53
happens real-time that's my next
01:55
challenge it's a very exciting time I'm
02:00
very grateful to be alive
02:01
during this time of change and
02:03
innovation ignoring a whole population
02:07
of people the loss is far greater than I
02:10
think anyone really realizes it's almost
02:12
overwhelming when you think about all of
02:14
the possibilities of greatness that are
02:16
there when we include everyone

Chris Avila is just beginning his higher education experience at IUPUI. He came to school to earn a business degree, but is now studying biomedical engineering with plans to get his doctorate and work in genetics. Attaining that goal will require years of school, and his workload will include advanced science and math courses that rely heavily on diagrams and graphs. The UITS Assistive Technology & Accessibility Centers ensure that students like Avila have the technologies and accommodations that they need to succeed, and that instructors have tools to develop an inclusive, barrier-free environment.

“IU’s accessibility services make me feel supported as a student,” said Avila, who is visually impaired. “The ability to use technology like the Braille Edge keyboard or the inTACT Sketchpad definitely makes classes easier. In my classes, I’ve been able to work with my instructors on making adaptations to the material to make it accessible. I haven’t scratched the surface of what I’ll need to do in the courses for my major, but so far it’s just been a matter of making things adaptable.”

IU has earned international recognition for the IUanyWare AT Desktop for Accessible Applications that Avila uses. Citrix honored UITS with its 2019 Innovation Award which recognizes customers it believes are using its technology in innovative ways to reimagine IT, drive business growth, and create new ways for working.
